This book presents a visual timeline of how video games evolved—from early experiments with oscilloscopes and blinking lights, through the golden age of arcades, the rise of home consoles and PCs, the shift into 3D worlds, and finally into today’s era of digital downloads, mobile gaming, esports, and persistent online universes. It is designed for video game enthusiasts and for anyone curious about the medium’s cultural and technological evolution.
The mandate was to create a playful, engaging book that captures the spirit of video games while presenting their history in a clear and accessible way. Because the subject matter spans decades of visual styles, genres, and technological milestones, I wanted the design approach to feel immersive and rooted in gaming culture without overwhelming the reader.
An illustrative direction felt like the strongest way to achieve this. Pixel‑based visuals immediately evoke nostalgia and connect to the early eras of gaming, while still offering flexibility to reinterpret later periods in a cohesive style. This allowed the book to maintain a unified visual identity even as the content moves through very different historical phases.
To reinforce the playful tone, decorative typography and game‑inspired graphic elements help create a sense of progression—almost like moving through levels. The layout is designed to feel dynamic and rhythmic, guiding the reader through the timeline in a way that mirrors the experience of navigating a game world: structured, exploratory, and full of visual cues that invite curiosity.
